You'll want to park in the plowed parking area next to the snowmobile trail on Frenchtown Road. The first 3 miles are on a snowmobile trail which will hasten your approach. The rest of the approach is on logging roads that may or may not have been traveled by skiers or sleds during the winter. Factor this into your approach time if you are attempting in a high snow year.

This is an extremely remote area! Plan to be self-sufficient. Best completed as a weekend camping trip, in my opinion.

Description

This long approach winds through the Maine woods primarily on logging roads with the final ascent being a bushwhack up the side of Baker Mountain. The first 3 miles follow a snowmobile trail which will hasten your approach. Around 3.2 miles, the snowmobile trail bears to the right and you'll break off to the left continuing to follow the obvious logging road.

The remainder of the approach is likely to be untracked and can take a while in deep snow. Follow the route on the map until you near the end of the trail that parallels the base of Baker Mountain. Around 7.2 miles, look for the obvious stream crossing. Turn into the woods and follow the left side of the stream up through the old growth glades until it opens up to the slide at around 2,500 ft.
